Referees Launch New Jerseys

  • Jun 19,2015
The Avondhu GAA Referees recently launched their new Jerseys / Kit at the Hibernian Hotel JAHC Double Header in Mallow GAA Complex. The committee were represented by Ciarán O' Regan, Secretary, Noel O' Regan, Treasurer, along with Referee's Alec Morrissey, Walter Cole and John O'Leary. Mick Murphy North Cork Referee's Administrator represented the Nth Cork Board.

Speaking about the new kits, the new Referee's Secretary, Ciarán O' Regan said that they wanted to freshen up their look.

"The Referees Committee recently saw some changes this year along with Noel O'Regan coming on board as Treasurer and Dave Farrell Snr taking over the Chairman's position from recently retired John Sexton. At our first Referee's meeting at the beginning of the year we set out our objectives and decided what we wanted to do to improve things for referee's and obtaining a new set of jerseys was one of them. Inter County Referee's had just got new attire and we decided to take a leaf out of their book. We had a look around and saw that other divisions within Cork had their own Referee Jerseys so we thought we'd do the same.

Various suggestions were invited from all referee's and together over twenty designs with various sportswear companies were considered  and as a group we decided on two which are are in keeping with the colours of the division and include the Avondhu GAA crest and website on the back. An important feature on the Jersey is on the sleeves where it says 'Give Respect, Get Respect'. It is part of a mission statement the GAA introduced a few years ago and we want to continue to represent that. ideal"
"We have approx twenty referees here in Avondhu and we all do it for the love of the game and it is often a group who largely go unnoticed due to the nature of the role. We promote our Gaelic Games culture and traditions as a group like every player, coach and administrator that participates in our games , Giving Respect and Getting Respect is very much our motto too which is why we have it on the Jerseys. At the end of the day, referee's set out to be fair in all games and clubs are very respectful of that ethos.''

"This year we coordinated  Referee's Draw under the stewardship of Noel O'Regan and it was a great success around the division. We had some fantastic Prizes thanks to various sponsors including Mallow GAA Complex who gave us a 1 year Gym Membership to the for the first name drawn.  We are extremely thankful to all who helped with the draw by way of sponsorship and by selling/buying lines. We are always trying to better the standard of Referees in Avondhu and a no of refresher courses are completed every year. We meet regularly to review  rules and situations that could come up in matches. We are fortunate to have a very high standard of Referees in Avondhu as such we have circa 10 referee's on the County Panel". The jerseys will be worn over the next few weeks at matches around the division and at County level.
